Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson addressed the media ahead of the Nations League Group B3 match against Austria at Dublin's Aviva Stadium. The build-up has been dominated by the fallout from the recent 3-0 win over Israel and the chaotic preceding trip to Debrecen. Following a player vote, the team fulfilled the fixtures after goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu withdrew.
Protests continue under the 'Stop The Game' campaign, with Irish Sport for Palestine calling for a boycott. The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) faced criticism, with board members appearing before the Oireachtas Sports Committee. Hallgrimsson described a challenging period, stating the association and himself would learn from mistakes.
He emphasized focusing on football despite being drawn into political discourse, following previous comments about 'genocide' that drew condemnation from the Israel Football Association. The conflict began with the Hamas attack on 7 October 2023, leading to a massive Israeli offensive in Gaza.
