WestBrom's £17m loss cut shows EFL compliance progress

West Bromwich Albion have halved their losses to £17m for 2024-25, a significant step towards meeting Championship profit and sustainability (P&S) rules. The club's operating loss for the year ending June 2025 dropped from £31m the previous year, bringing their three-year rolling loss total to £55.6m since relegation in 2021. The EFL had flagged Albion for exceeding the £39m P&S limit in the 2023-24 season, making this reduction crucial for avoiding sanctions. Crucially, spending on infrastructure, the academy, and the women's team is exempt from P&S calculations, explaining the lower figure despite substantial investments like the Walsall training ground and safe-standing seats at The Hawthorns.

Staff costs fell by £4.9m to £37.1m, largely due to selling high-earning players like goalkeeper Alex Palmer and part of the fee for Brandon Thomas-Asante. However, selling homegrown players and loaning out others like Torbjorn Heggem cost the squad, though it aligns with the club's new financial reality under owner Shilen Patel's Bilkul Football WBA, which invested £31.5m to cover inherited debts and losses. Revenue rose to £30.4m from £28.2m, driven by a new Sky Sports EFL deal, though gate receipts dipped slightly.

These figures signal Albion are now financially stable enough to potentially strengthen the squad this summer, moving beyond the "darkest period" under the previous regime. While questions remain about recent footballing decisions, the financial turnaround provides crucial breathing room for the future.
