Jonathan Morgan, the former coach of Sheffield United footballer Maddy Cusack, testified at an inquest into her death, detailing their final phone conversation on September 11, 2023, just over a week before she was found unconscious at her Horsley, Derbyshire home on September 20, 2023. Morgan told Chesterfield Coroner's Court that during their call, Cusack, 27, mentioned visiting her GP and receiving medication, and indicated she would be taking time off work. He stated that Cusack also discussed potentially attending a match on September 30, and he believed her comments indicated a desire to return to football, though he stopped short of calling himself "reassured."

The inquest has previously heard that Cusack's family filed a complaint with Sheffield United in the week following her death, citing issues stemming from her relationship with Morgan. Another former teammate, Grace Riglar, testified that Cusack was anxious about Morgan joining the club due to prior experiences at Leicester City. Cusack's mother, Deborah, described Morgan as her daughter's "nemesis," alleging he made comments about Cusack's weight and relationships to "cut her down to size."

Morgan also testified that he had previously told the Football Association that Cusack was "generally a liar." He confirmed that Cusack had messaged him on September 6, 2023, stating she would miss training. When questioned by assistant coroner Sophie Cartwright KC about whether he consulted HR regarding Cusack's mental health issues, Morgan stated he escalated the matter to what he considered the appropriate person at the time. He affirmed that he would have raised further concerns with a doctor if he believed Cusack was at "imminent risk" of self-harm or suicide. The inquest continues.
