Stoke City's Spending Strategy Under New Rules

Stoke City is actively leveraging the Championship's new Squad Cost Rules (SCR) to reshape their squad this summer, according to football finance expert Kieran Maguire. The club has reportedly spent approximately £21 million on new signings, including Ethan Galbraith, Svante Ingelsson, Djibril Soumare, Luke Graham, and making Milan Smit's move permanent. They also acquired goalkeeper Josh Griffiths from West Bromwich Albion.

The SCR, implemented for the 2026-27 season, permits clubs to allocate 85% of their income to player and manager expenditures, a significant shift from the previous £39 million loss limit over three years. Stoke's financial position was bolstered by new owner John Coates waiving a £90 million loan, which offset a potential £29 million loss in 2024-25. Owners can now inject up to £33 million over three years, capped at £15 million annually.

Maguire notes that the club's decent commercial income and the owner's willingness to fund transfers are advantageous. He also highlighted that transfer payments are often structured in installments, allowing clubs to manage their spending within the SCR calculations more effectively. This approach enables strategic negotiation on transfer fees, providing a financial advantage under the new regulations.
