An inquest into the death of former Sheffield United footballer Maddy Cusack heard her mother claim the player would still be alive if the women's team coach, Jonathan Morgan, had not been employed. Deborah Cusack described Morgan, who joined the club in February 2023, as her daughter's "nemesis" and stated his employment created a direct line to Maddy's demise.

Deborah Cusack told Chesterfield Coroner's Court that Morgan made comments about her daughter's weight and relationship to "cut her down to size." She alleged her daughter felt history was repeating itself after leaving Leicester City, where she had a difficult relationship with Morgan. Cusack was reportedly devastated when Morgan joined Sheffield United.

The court heard Morgan called Cusack "bottom heavy," prompting her to change eating habits and increase training. Her mother refuted claims that her daughter's mental health issues stemmed from her girlfriend moving clubs. She stated Maddy was concerned about her job in marketing if she couldn't play, feeling the club wouldn't support her over the coach.
