Private Equity Dealmaking & Exits

The pipeline for private equity exits remains severely constrained, as evidenced by sponsors finding assets difficult to sell even when acquired during less frothy market conditions, creating valuation challenges for future disposals. Exits are being actively explored in major European assets; Advent and Cinven are testing the market for their elevator giant, TK Elevator, amid takeover interest from Kone in a potential €25 billion transaction. Elsewhere, Warburg Pincus is assessing options for subprime auto lender Exeter Finance, which could command a valuation exceeding $3 billion. In contrast to exit struggles, deal activity continues across sectors, with HIG Capital testing the market for industrial services provider JT Thorpe, leveraging its scaled platform appeal to large-cap buyers, while Seaport successfully divested tech firm Exacom to Motorola Solutions.

Sector Investments & Platform Builds

Buyout firms are actively building specialized platforms through strategic bolt-on acquisitions, particularly within infrastructure and specialized services. TPG launched a new platform, One Aged Care, to capitalize on mounting demand for elderly healthcare services across Singapore and Malaysia. In the industrial sphere, LFM added manufacturer PowerBuilt to its American Automation Group platform, which already includes Southern Tooling and Tuttle AAG, signaling a push toward automation solutions. Further consolidation occurred in the cold chain sector, where Sagard-backed Norbec acquired Canadian Curtis, a designer of prefabricated cold rooms and insulated panels. Meanwhile, Knox Lane-backed Ruppert Landscape expanded its commercial services footprint by picking up Landscapes Unlimited.

Geographic & Thematic Focus

Geographic strategies are shifting, with capital flows showing a renewed focus on domestic markets in certain regions. Gulf capital previously targeting the US or Europe may be redirected towards home countries, according to Middle East PE leadership, as regional investors seek stability. On the infrastructure front, EIG-backed MidOcean Energy secured a $500 million co-investment from Japan’s Idemitsu Kosan to fuel the expansion of its Liquefied Natural Gas platform. In software consolidation, Main Capital’s portfolio companies Cisbox and Millum merged to form a comprehensive source-to-pay provider, expanding their reach across the DACH and Nordic regions. Furthermore, Oakley Capital provided backing to France-based Groupe Senef, finalizing the full exit of incumbent investor Isatis Capital.

LP Concerns & Tech Funding Dynamics

Limited Partners are adjusting mandates amid market uncertainty, with some institutional investors signaling a reduction in PE exposure. The State of Maine pension fund is planning its second cut to its private equity target within four years and may use secondaries sales to manage the reduction. In technology, despite high levels of investment in AI, concerns persist that the sector’s funding concentration risks widening existing wealth gaps if women are excluded from leadership and investment roles. This trend contrasts with the ongoing race to identify the next major unicorns; 187 companies joined the Crunchbase Unicorn Board last year alone. Supporting the digital infrastructure buildout, Candex extended its Series C round to over $40 million to address the administrative hurdles enterprises face when onboarding small global vendors.

Deal Awards & Sector Expansion

Recent deal awards reflect success in specialized mid-market and large-cap European transactions. Kinderhook Industries received recognition for its Mid-Cap North America Deal of the Year, while Accel-KKR’s exit from Smart Communications earned the Large-Cap Europe Deal of the Year Award. In the specialized healthcare segment, Hildred-backed SportsMed acquired The Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Center, adding locations across New Jersey and Connecticut to its physical therapy network. Separately, New Heritage-backed Icelandirect acquired supplement manufacturer Soma Labs, bolstering its contract manufacturing capabilities for human and pet nutrition brands.
