Raindrops Cause Car Corrosion Through Electrical Charges

A new study reveals that raindrops carry electrical charges up to 9,000 volts, capable of punching through protective coatings on car surfaces. Led by Zhongyuan Ni, Rüdiger Berger, and Hans-Jürgen Butt at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research in Mainz, Germany, the research identifies 'slide electrification'—when water drops strip charge from insulating surfaces as they slide across them.

The team tested this by releasing 35-microliter salinated water drops onto a copper plate coated with a 60-nanometer Teflon film. After 3,000 drops (equivalent to an afternoon of rain), the Teflon coating was breached, with pits several nanometers deep. Uncharged drops left the surface intact.

Using high-speed cameras, researchers observed charged drops forming Taylor cones—sharp shapes indicating electrostatic force overcomes surface tension. They calculated that a 2-nanocoulomb drop reaches 60 kV/mm, matching Teflon's breakdown threshold. This suggests lightning-like electrical breakdown, not just abrasion, causes corrosion.

The findings challenge traditional prevention methods focused on paints and polymer films, indicating a need for new approaches to combat rain-induced damage.
