Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa's comeback attempt was halted Friday after his doctor expressed discomfort with his ankle recovery. The 31-year-old underwent left ankle surgery in May, targeting a six-to-eight month return. Despite participating in live batting practice and believing he could rejoin the team last weekend against Tampa Bay, Correa began feeling significant soreness and inflammation.

An MRI revealed the tendon wasn't mature enough for game action. "He told me, 'I don't feel comfortable with this,' and he pretty much said I'm not going to play," Correa said. Manager Joe Espada announced Tuesday that Correa would not return this season. Correa plans to get another MRI in two months and expects to be 100% by spring training.

For now, he's pulling back workouts and avoiding activities that stress his foot. Correa joined the Astros last summer via trade from the Minnesota Twins, where he played third base last season with Jeremy Pena at shortstop. He was hitting .279 with three home runs and 16 RBIs before the injury.

The No. 1 pick in the 2012 draft spent his first seven seasons in Houston before the blockbuster move.
