Dealmaking & Exits: Persistent Hurdles and New Launches

The private equity exit pipeline continues facing difficulties, with even assets acquired during less frothy market periods struggling to find buyers, raising concerns about valuation resets across the sector. This difficult environment contrasts with several high-profile exits being explored, as Advent and Cinven weigh a €25 billion sale of elevator giant TK Elevator amid takeover talks initiated by Kone. Simultaneously, Warburg Pincus is assessing options for subprime auto lender Exeter Finance, potentially fetching a $3 billion transaction. On the acquisition front, Audax completed the purchase of property management firm Akam from Nautic Partners, while Seaport concluded its exit from tech firm Exacom, which was acquired by Motorola Solutions.

Platform Building & Sector Consolidation

Firms are actively building out sector platforms through bolt-on acquisitions, particularly in specialized industrial and infrastructure services. Fort Point-backed VisuSewer expanded its footprint in wastewater infrastructure by acquiring Wisconsin-based United Survey, a provider of inspection and cleaning services. In automation, LFM integrated manufacturer PowerBuilt into its American Automation Group platform alongside Southern Tooling and Tuttle AAG. Elsewhere, Sagard-backed Norbec acquired Canadian Curtis, a designer of prefabricated freezer rooms, bolstering its cold chain capabilities, while Knox Lane's Ruppert Landscape picked up Landscapes Unlimited to deepen its commercial landscaping services in Maryland.

New Ventures and Geographic Expansion

Major firms are launching new platforms to capitalize on demographic and industrial trends. TPG established One Aged Care specifically to address burgeoning demand for elderly healthcare services across Singapore and Malaysia. In the energy transition space, EIG-backed MidOcean secured a $500 million investment from Japan’s Idemitsu Kosan to fuel the expansion of its liquefied natural gas platform. Furthermore, TPG rolled out the industrial software firm Velotic, appointing former PTC CEO James Heppelmann as executive chairman to guide its growth strategy. In complementary moves, New Mile and Haywood Lane backed Wilkerson Crane Rental to fund fleet expansion and potential strategic acquisitions.

LP Relations and Governance Scrutiny

Limited Partners are adjusting mandates amid governance concerns and portfolio rebalancing efforts. The $74.9 billion Nevada PERS plans to exit its exposure to Clearlake Capital, citing potential conflicts of interest stemming from Clearlake’s recent agreement to buy Pathway Capital Management. Separately, Maine is planning its second reduction to its private equity target within four years, suggesting readiness to utilize secondaries sales in specific portfolio scenarios. Meanwhile, there is an ongoing focus on defense sector investments, as LPs maintain a "defence offensive," notably featuring a defense expert's quick return to the market alongside news of a US endowment appointing a new head honcho.

Venture Capital Activity and AI Concerns

The venture ecosystem continues to see significant capital deployment, though concerns persist regarding equitable representation in high-growth areas like artificial intelligence. AI investor Rana el Kaliouby warned that if women are sidelined from funding and leadership in AI, the resulting wealth gap consequences will be severe, especially as the fastest AI breakthroughs are currently emerging from scaleups, not large enterprises. In recent funding rounds, European fintech Upvest raised $125 million with backing from Tencent and Sapphire Ventures, while New York-based Candex extended its Series C round to over $40 million to facilitate enterprise onboarding of global vendors.

Awards and Sector-Specific Investments

Recent industry recognition highlights success in mid-cap and large-cap deals across North America and Europe. Kinderhook Industries received PE Hub’s Mid-Cap North America Deal of the Year award, while Accel-KKR won the Large-Cap Europe award for its exit from customer communications software company Smart Communications as detailed by Capza’s Antoine Druais. In specialized buyouts, New Heritage-backed Icelandirect acquired supplement manufacturer Soma Labs, and Hildred-backed Sports Med purchased The Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Center across New Jersey and Connecticut. Furthermore, Oakley Capital provided backing to France-based Groupe Senef, marking a full exit for Isatis Capital from the business.
