Little Red Dots May Be Early Black Hole Stage

A new simulation published in Nature suggests that "little red dots" — compact, red-tinted objects observed by the James Webb Space Telescope dating back about one billion years after the Big Bang — may be precursors to massive black holes. Astrophysicist Sunmyon Chon of the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics led the study, which models how chaotic swirls of early-universe material could naturally form black holes whose rapid accretion produces light emissions matching the little red dots. First seen in 2023, these objects appear in nearly every JWST image, each occupying about one pixel.

While astronomers agree they are likely black holes with dust clouds being sucked inward, debate continues over their exact nature. Rohan Naidu of the University of Hawaii proposes they could be "black hole stars" — newly formed black holes shrouded in brightly burning hydrogen gas. Roberto Maiolino of the University of Cambridge favors the theory that they represent a missing evolutionary step where bright dust and gas are rapidly subsumed, allowing black holes to reach large masses within a few hundred million years of the Big Bang.

The simulation provides a natural formation pathway linking early universe conditions to these mysterious observations.
