PS5 Pro PSSR 2.0 Update Reportedly Coming

Sony is reportedly preparing a major software update for the PlayStation 5 Pro, targeting a release between January and March 2026. According to Japanese insider Gust_Fan, the upgrade will introduce PSSR 2.0, a revised AI-powered upscaling system. This move directly addresses longstanding criticism that the console, despite its premium hardware, has failed to leverage AI upscaling effectively compared to PC alternatives.

The initial PSSR implementation often delivered marginal visual gains while introducing artifacts. The new version is said to implement reconstruction techniques similar to AMD's FSR 4, aiming for more stable high-resolution output from lower-resolution frames. This should allow the PS5 Pro's GPU to work more efficiently, potentially boosting frame rates for games currently running at 70-80 FPS and helping Sony achieve its 4K 120 FPS target across more titles.

Beyond performance, backward compatibility is a priority. Older PlayStation Store and PlayStation Plus titles will automatically upscale to higher resolutions through improved system-level scaling, without needing developer rework. Sony will provide new debugging tools to help developers optimize future games for PSSR 2.0 from the ground up. The next wave of optimized titles will reveal how effectively this expanded feature set is utilized.
