PS5 Frame Generation Coming 'At Some Point' Says Sony

Sony's PlayStation hardware will eventually get frame generation technology, though gamers will need to wait longer than expected. Mark Cerny confirmed that FSR Frame Generation is based on co-developed technology and "should be seen at some point" on PlayStation platforms. The feature won't arrive in 2026, with Sony stating it has "no more releases planned for this year."

This follows Sony's recent introduction of Upgraded PSSR 2.0 on PS5 Pro consoles, which unlocked additional AI capabilities in the console's APU. The timing suggests frame generation could debut alongside the next-generation PlayStation hardware, expected between 2027 and 2028. Some analysts believe Sony might announce FSR Frame Generation simultaneously with the PlayStation 6, potentially offering a scaled-back version for existing PS5 consoles.

Modders have already demonstrated FSR 4 Redstone Frame Generation running on RDNA 3 hardware, raising questions about whether the PS5's RDNA 2 APU could support the feature with acceptable performance trade-offs. Since FSR Redstone was developed in partnership with Sony, the company has technical foundations to build upon, though implementing frame generation will likely require significant optimization for console hardware.
