OptiScaler Adds Vulkan Support to FSR 4 Frame Generation

OptiScaler has expanded its FSR 4 compatibility to include Vulkan support, building on its earlier work bypassing AMD's restrictions for older RDNA GPUs. The modding team released test build v0.9.0-pre10, which enables FSR 4 frame generation on Vulkan-based games through a compatibility layer similar to how DXVK translates DirectX to Vulkan.

This development follows OptiScaler's previous achievement of running AMD's Redstone frame generation on RDNA 3 GPUs, originally limited to newer hardware. By implementing Vulkan support, the tool now extends FSR 4 functionality to games that use Vulkan APIs rather than DirectX 12. The approach mirrors Linux translation tools that convert DirectX calls to Vulkan, allowing broader compatibility across gaming platforms.

However, the implementation faces limitations on Linux systems due to missing Mesa extensions, which the OptiScaler team cannot resolve on their end. Despite these challenges, the addition of Vulkan support represents a significant expansion of FSR 4's reach, particularly for Linux gamers who often prefer Vulkan over DirectX 12 for performance reasons.
