Valve adds Linux FSR 4 support to Proton Experimental

Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais posted on Bluesky that Proton Experimental now carries FSR 4 support for RDNA 3 GPUs on Linux. The upscaler arrives via the latest experimental build, meaning it’s not yet a stable feature. Griffais singled out SteamOS and the upcoming Steam Machine as primary targets for the rollout. Early adopters can expect occasional frame drops as the code matures.

Current implementation only covers discrete RDNA 3 graphics chips; integrated Radeon iGPUs such as the 780M and 890M found in handheld consoles remain unsupported. Community hacks using tools like OptiScaler can force FSR 4 on those iGPUs, but they’re unofficial. Valve’s Linux graphics team, known for driver contributions, may extend official support before the Steam Machine ships. Official support would also benefit Linux‑based cloud gaming services.

By exposing FSR 4 on Linux, Valve narrows the performance gap between Windows and open‑source gaming, giving owners of RDNA 3 desktops a upscaling option. The move also signals that Valve is investing resources to polish the Steam Machine’s Linux stack before its market debut. Linux gamers with supported hardware can test the feature today, albeit with experimental stability. No additional download is required beyond the Proton update.
