Valve has completed HDMI 2.1 implementation for its Steam Machine gaming PC, bringing full-featured high-framerate 4K support to Linux. The company worked extensively with AMD to add FRL support and variable refresh rate capabilities over HDMI connections.

Current drivers already support HDMI 2.1 VRR on both FreeSync and HDMI Forum VRR displays, addressing a major limitation in Linux gaming. Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais confirmed the technical work is finished, though Steam Deck users will need to wait for a future update to access these features.

The update will enable 4K 240 Hz gaming with DSC compression over HDMI, significantly expanding display compatibility for Steam Machine owners. This represents important progress for Linux-based gaming platforms that previously faced licensing barriers preventing advanced HDMI features.

While the Steam Machine targets a niche market at its premium price point, Valve's Linux development work benefits the broader gaming ecosystem. The HDMI 2.1 support joins upcoming FSR 4 enhancements as part of Valve's ongoing efforts to improve performance and compatibility.
