Mesa 26.0.0 has officially launched, bringing significant performance improvements to Linux gamers using AMD Radeon graphics cards. The open-source driver update delivers enhanced Vulkan ray tracing performance through the RADV driver, with particular benefits for Unreal Engine games.

Developer Natalie Vock highlighted optimizations to shader compilation and function calls that make RADV work more efficiently during ray tracing operations. In Ghostwire Tokyo, ray tracing passes have been sped up by more than two times, though this doesn't translate directly to a 200% performance increase across all games. The improvements help Linux gaming catch up to Windows in ray tracing capabilities.

Beyond AMD optimizations, Mesa 26.0.0 introduces support for Qualcomm Adreno Gen 8 graphics on Snapdragon X2 SoCs and includes updates to the open-source NVK driver for NVIDIA GPUs, as well as Intel Iris and ANV drivers. The release also adds KosmicKrisp, a Vulkan-to-Metal layered driver for macOS. Users can expect the usual flurry of improvements across all drivers and components, with numerous new extensions and features highlighted by their developers.
