Lenovo Warns of March PC Price Hikes Due to Memory Cost Surge

Lenovo is preparing to raise prices for its PCs in March, as confirmed in a letter to channel partners obtained by TechPowerUp News. North America channel chief Wade McFarland stated the company must adjust pricing due to the ongoing industry-wide memory shortage. This affects products across Lenovo's Intelligent Devices Group (IDG), including desktops, notebooks, and tablets, as well as its Infrastructure Solutions Group (ISG). Ryan McCurdy, Lenovo's North American president, emphasized the necessity of these adjustments, stating 'we've absolutely had to adjust and continue to adjust [pricing]. There's no way around it.'

To mitigate potential customer shock, Lenovo is advising partners to submit orders before the end of February, locking in current pricing. McFarland explained that pricing is influenced by order timing and fulfillment timing, and that the company reviews prices periodically in response to market conditions. While acknowledging suppliers have been 'good' and informing clients of changes in advance, the pressure from rising memory costs remains a critical factor driving the upcoming hike.

This price increase underscores the tangible impact of the global memory chip shortage on major PC manufacturers. Consumers planning PC purchases should expect higher costs starting next month, highlighting the ongoing vulnerability of the supply chain to component price volatility. The move signals a broader industry trend where memory inflation forces hardware makers to pass costs onto buyers.
