Jeff Kaplan's studio Kintsugiyama has announced an alpha playtest for The Legend of California, its Western-inspired open-world FPS game. The playtest runs from March 26 to March 30, with sign-ups open on Steam. Participants will be selected randomly around March 25, and the test will be online-only, supporting solo or squad play for up to four players.

Kaplan, former lead designer of Overwatch, describes this as a 'limited playtest' where not everyone who registers will get access. The studio plans to use feedback from this test to improve the game before its 2026 launch. According to the Steam FAQ, the game will enter Early Access before a full release, with another playtest scheduled for summer.

The game's hardware requirements have also been revealed. The minimum spec targets 30 FPS and includes an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 Super or AMD Radeon RX 6600, 16 GB RAM, and an Intel Core i7-10700K or AMD Ryzen 7 3700X. The recommended spec for 60 FPS bumps up to an RTX 3080 or RX 6800, 32 GB RAM, and newer processors.
