Citrix VDI Gains Intel LPE Core Support

Citrix has updated its VDI platform with enhanced support for Intel's low-power island E-core architecture. The company announced two major improvements: LPE-core awareness that optimizes workload placement on commercial notebooks, and HDX Super Resolution leveraging Intel Video Processing Library to enhance display stream quality. These updates aim to improve both battery life and visual experience for virtual desktop users.

The new LPE-core awareness allows Citrix Desktop to confine workloads to low-power cores, enabling clock-gating or power-gating of the main CPU complex. First-party testing shows this can reduce power consumption by up to 25% on business notebooks. Administrators can deploy the latest Citrix desktop version without policy changes, as the application automatically detects processors with LPE cores introduced in Intel's Core Ultra "Meteor Lake" and enhanced in "Lunar Lake."

The graphics-related improvements include finer architecture awareness of Intel integrated graphics, reducing power draw by using only necessary hardware components. The HDX Super Resolution feature uses AI-based upscaling technology similar to XeSS but optimized for integrated graphics, improving image quality while opportunistically reducing VDI display stream bitrate. Citrix also maintains its dynamic frame rate technology that adjusts based on screen movement.
