Bungie Shelves Destiny 2 and Destiny 3, Pivots to Marathon Amid Layoffs

Bungie is pulling the plug on Destiny 2 development as of June 2026, with the June 9 update marking the game's final chapter. Bloomberg's Jason Schreier reports layoffs are coming after that date. Any plans for Destiny 3 appear to be dead — developers pitched several games to leadership, including potential Destiny titles, but nothing got approved.

Sony's Q4 2025 financials show the company booked $560 million in impairment losses tied to its Bungie acquisition. The studio's pivot to Marathon is now its primary focus, but the shooter's reception has been lukewarm. Daily peak concurrent players have fallen to roughly 10-12,000 three months post-launch, well below internal targets.

Bungie is scrambling to retain players by rolling out new PvE and co-op game modes for Marathon, signaling that PvP alone hasn't captured the audience the studio needs. The June 2026 cutoff date for Destiny 2 marks a significant downsizing at the once-prestigious developer, and Marathon's player retention struggles put Bungie's near-term viability in question.
