Bungie reveals Marathon overhaul plan after player criticism

Bungie is finally talking about Marathon's future. Game Director Joe Ziegler published a lengthy blog this week acknowledging the shooter has been "overwhelming to learn," with new players thrown into a "hostile environment" after a short tutorial. The post outlines a two-pronged strategy: fix what's broken while doubling down on what works. Season two arrives June 2.

The studio plans to introduce two experimental game modes. One will focus more on PvE with "a light touch of PvP," while the other pits players exclusively against environmental threats like the UESC. Bungie will also add a rotating Duos zone queue so players aren't forced into teams of three. Season three will bring improved onboarding to ease new players into the experience.

Bungie is also working on a new zone "leaning into more alien elements and mind warping debuffs," plus a new exfil mechanic offering tradeoffs between loot and safety. The company has committed to active development through 2027. Sony recently recorded a $560 million impairment against Bungie's assets but says it remains committed to the game.
