Bungie Faces Major Layoffs Amid Destiny Uncertainty

Bungie, the studio behind Destiny, is planning a "significant number" of layoffs according to Bloomberg. The news comes after the company ended active development on Destiny 2 without any new projects lined up, including no immediate plans for Destiny 3. This follows Sony's $3.6 billion acquisition of Bungie in 2022.

The studio now focuses on Marathon, its first-person shooter released in March, which failed to meet Sony's expectations and resulted in a $560 million quarterly loss. Bungie has already moved some Destiny staff to the Marathon team as it struggles to boost player numbers for the underperforming title.

Despite concerns Sony might shut down Bungie completely like it did Bluepoint, the studio will still release Destiny 2's final update, Monument of Triumph, on June 9. Servers will remain online for years, though staff-pitched new projects remain unapproved by Sony, leaving the future of the franchise uncertain.
