Bungie Shelved Destiny 2 Plans While Staff Worked in Dark

Bungie's decision to end Destiny 2 development in June 2026 came as a shock to most employees, according to insider sources. The studio kept the vast majority of staff unaware of the sunsetting plans, with only select team members working on the final update or reassigned to Marathon knowing the truth. Many developers continued working on future Destiny 2 content without knowing the game's fate.

The secrecy coincided with Bungie shifting resources toward Marathon, which has struggled commercially despite estimated 1.2 million sales. Sony is now supporting the project with additional resources as Bungie scrambles to address player concerns through new PvE and PvP features. Unlike Destiny, Marathon isn't expected to become a major live-service revenue replacement.

Currently, no other games are in development at Bungie beyond Marathon, which remains early in its live-service lifecycle. Employee pitches for new Destiny projects have reportedly gone nowhere. The situation reveals how major studios can make strategic pivots while leaving most workers uninformed about fundamental changes to their projects.

This internal disconnect highlights the risks of poorly communicated transitions in the gaming industry, where developers invest years in games that can suddenly face cancellation.
