Destiny 2 Development Concludes After Nine Years

Bungie will cease active development of Destiny 2 after nine years, with the final content update "Monument of Triumph" arriving on June 9. Despite ending new content, the studio plans to keep servers online indefinitely, positioning the game as a welcoming place for returning players.

The move follows a turbulent period for Bungie since its 2022 Sony acquisition, which included two rounds of layoffs in 2023 and 2024. The studio's latest release, Marathon, launched this March after a delay but failed to become the hit the company had hoped for, prompting Bungie to shift focus to incubating future projects.

The final update includes significant quality-of-life improvements: bringing back the Director interface, implementing node menus at screen bottom, adding a permanent Pantheon mode with new bosses, and updating all raid and dungeon gear to modern standards. These changes respond directly to player feedback about the game's usability and progression systems.
