Ukrainian Drones Halt Russia’s Sea of Azov Shipping

Ukrainian drone strikes have forced Russia to shut down all shipping in the Sea of Azov within a week, proving that a nation without a traditional navy can still block vital maritime corridors. Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces launched one‑way attack drones that hit more than 100 Russian tankers and vessels each night from July 6 to July 13, with video evidence posted online. The assault compelled Russia to close the Don River route into the Sea of Azov and suspend all Kerch Strait transits to the Black Sea, further isolating the Russian‑occupied Crimean Peninsula.

The closure cuts off seaborne fuel deliveries to Crimea, which is already suffering severe rationing and power outages after Ukraine’s broader drone campaign against Russian energy sites. It also threatens roughly a quarter of Russia’s grain exports, prompting a rise in wheat prices as the world’s top grain exporter faces new logistical hurdles.

Analysts at the Institute for the Study of War describe the strikes as a “new phase” in Ukraine’s effort to sever Crimea’s logistics network and disrupt Russian petroleum and grain shipments. Satellite imagery from the EU’s Copernicus program confirms burning ships and damage consistent with the drone attacks.
