Ukraine Targets Russian Ships in Azov Sea

Ukraine has intensified its campaign against Russian merchant shipping in the Sea of Azov, targeting fuel tankers supplying occupied Crimea. Over a 48-hour period, Kyiv reported striking eight small fuel tankers and two larger vessels from Russia's "shadow fleet." This marks the highest number of merchant vessels attacked within such a short timeframe since the renewed Russian invasion began.

Ukraine's commander of unmanned forces stated that 21 enemy vessels were targeted in 72 hours, including 19 shadow fleet tankers, a cargo ship, and a ferry. These attacks come as Ukraine broadens its drone operations against targets in Crimea and Russia. Strikes on refineries and port facilities have already led to fuel shortages and rationing in Crimea.

The escalation highlights Ukraine's strategy to disrupt Russian fuel supplies, which Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba argues are critical to funding Russia's war effort. The "shadow fleet," estimated at over 1,500 vessels used to circumvent sanctions, faces increasing pressure, with the UK and EU targeting registries and intercepting ships. These actions could impact global oil transport and insurance markets, increasing risks for vessels operating in sanctioned trade routes.
