Honda Cancels Electric Vehicles Developed with Sony in Major Shift

Honda has ended development of three electric vehicles it was planning to launch in the U.S., with Sony Honda Mobility confirming it will not bring its EVs to market. This marks a significant retreat for the automaker, which has struggled to gain traction in the competitive battery-electric vehicle (BEV) sector. The canceled projects included a small city car and two larger models, all part of a broader strategy that has failed to resonate with consumers. Honda e, its first EV, sold just 12,000 units globally over four years, while the Prologue—a rebadged GM model—saw temporary success with 72,000 sales in 2023 and 2024 but is now being discontinued due to declining demand after federal tax credits expired.
