Google rolls out Android app verification timeline

Google will embed a new verification service on Android 8+ devices starting this month. The package com.google.android.verifier will sit dormant until regional activation, then block installation of unverified apps. This move follows years of pressure to curb sideloaded malware and aligns app stores like Samsung Galaxy Store and Xiaomi Get Apps under a unified policy.

In July, Google releases two developer APIs: the Android Developer ID Status API to check package name registration, and an Android Developer Console API that lets developers manage names without leaving their IDE. The same month introduces “limited distribution” accounts, permitting hobbyists to share apps on up to 20 devices without fees or ID checks.

By September, devices in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand will enforce verification before install. An advanced flow lets power users bypass the check, but requires navigating hidden menus and waiting a full day. Google says it will monitor impact and aims to make verification a global policy by 2027, tightening control over the Android ecosystem.
