Google rolls out Android Developer Verification to all devs

Google is rolling out Android Developer Verification to every developer on the Play Console and Android Developer Console. The move follows a study that found more than 90 times the malware rate from sideloaded apps compared to those on Google Play. By tying app registration to a verified identity, Google aims to curb anonymous threats while preserving openness.

Developers can start verification today. Those who only distribute outside Google Play create an account in the Android Developer Console, while Play users will see updates in their Google Play Console over the next weeks. User download flows stay unchanged until September 2026, when Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand will enforce the registration requirement.

Android Studio will display an app’s registration status when generating a signed bundle or APK within two months, streamlining the workflow. Students and hobbyists can sign up for a free, limited‑distribution account that requires only an email. Meanwhile, power users retain ADB or an advanced sideload flow, keeping flexibility while protecting vulnerable users.

Google will introduce the Android Developer Verifier system service in April 2026, letting devices check an app’s registration before installation. By September 30, 2026, only verified developers may install or update apps on certified devices in the four pilot countries; unregistered sideloads will need ADB or the advanced flow. The policy will expand worldwide in 2027.
