Google maps out Android sideloading timeline, September rollout

Google is rolling out a multi‑stage overhaul of Android’s sideloading safeguards. Starting this month a new system service will auto‑install on most devices, laying groundwork for developer verification later in the year. The move follows last year’s Android developer verification program, which aimed to make installing apps from unknown sources less risky for users for Android 14 devices.

July sees the global launch of the Android Developer ID Status API and early access to the Android Developer Console API, plus limited‑distribution accounts for students and hobbyists that let apps reach up to 20 devices without a government ID or fee. In August the full limited‑distribution accounts and a new Console API roll out, alongside an advanced flow for power users installing unverified apps.

On September 30 the verification shield activates in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand, requiring app registration for participating stores such as Play Store, Honor App Market, Oppo, Galaxy Store, V‑Appstore, Palm Store and Xiaomi’s Get Apps. Developers who distribute through these channels must complete verification by the deadline, while ADB and the advanced flow still permit sideloading of unregistered packages.
