Europe's Ariane 6 rocket made its debut in heavy-lift configuration Thursday, successfully deploying 32 Amazon satellites for the company's broadband constellation. The Ariane 64 variant, equipped with four strap-on boosters, generated over 3.4 million pounds of thrust during liftoff from French Guiana's Guiana Space Center. The mission marked a crucial milestone for both Amazon's satellite ambitions and Europe's independent launch capabilities.

Amazon has booked more than 100 launches across four providers to deploy over 3,200 satellites in its planned constellation. The 32 satellites launched Thursday weighed approximately 20 metric tons combined, nearly maxing out the Ariane 64's payload capacity. This mission brings Amazon's total satellite count to 214 launched across eight flights with United Launch Alliance, SpaceX, and now Arianespace. The company initially bypassed SpaceX when selecting launch providers for its Project Kuiper program.

The successful launch demonstrates Europe's reentry into the competitive commercial launch market after years of delays. With six flights now under its belt, Ariane 6 has achieved the fastest launch cadence among new rockets competing for Amazon's business. The mission validates the rocket's capability to handle large-scale constellation deployments, positioning Arianespace as a key player in the growing satellite broadband industry.
