ULA Atlas V exclusively for Boeing Starliner

United Launch Alliance's (ULA) final six Atlas V rockets are now exclusively designated for launching Boeing's Starliner spacecraft. This decision sidelines plans for these rockets to carry Amazon's Project Kuiper satellites.

Amazon has shifted its satellite deployment strategy, previously relying on ULA's Atlas V for its Project Kuiper constellation. The company has now booked 13 launches on SpaceX's Falcon 9 and intends to utilize ULA's Vulcan rocket, for which it funded new assembly facilities. However, Vulcan has faced delays due to solid rocket booster issues, and Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket, also owned by Jeff Bezos, is grounded after a launch pad explosion. This leaves Europe's Ariane 6 and SpaceX's Falcon 9 as the primary available launch vehicles for Amazon.

Amazon has purchased over 100 launches for Project Kuiper, with 15 completed by October 2023, deploying 398 satellites. Initial services will be available at mid-latitudes, with plans to expand coverage globally. The redirection of Atlas V rockets to Starliner missions underscores the ongoing challenges and shifting priorities within the commercial space launch sector.
