RFU plans to turn Twickenham into a concert hotspot, boosting rugby funding

The Rugby Football Union has unveiled a plan to boost Allianz Stadium’s calendar, aiming to raise non‑sporting events from three to 15 a year. Over the past 18 months, the RFU has consulted Richmond Council, transport partners and local residents, insisting the move will unlock new revenue streams for the sport in 2025 season.

Bill Sweeney, RFU chief executive, argues that hosting big‑name concerts will generate tens of millions for the local and national economies and create hundreds of new jobs in south‑west London. He notes that the stadium’s current use is limited by the short rugby calendar, constraining its financial potential for 2025.

The proposal includes a new facility fee on concert tickets to fund a Community Enhancement Fund, overseen by a panel of local representatives, business groups and RFU members. Crowd limits would cap weekend events at 75,000, below the 82,000 capacity for rugby matches, with additional rail capacity already secured today.

If approved, the plan would see Allianz Stadium become the country’s second‑largest venue for live events, matching the financial weight of the national stadium. The RFU expects the expanded calendar to underpin a £500m investment in rugby over five years, strengthening grassroots and elite levels alike for 2025 season growth.
