Ben Stokes made an impact with bat and ball for Durham against Derbyshire on day two in the Rothesay County Championship. The former England captain scored 53 from 61 balls, hitting 11 fours, before he was caught and bowled by Anuj Dal as Durham posted 283 in the Division Two fixture.

Stokes then struck with his very first ball to remove Harry Came, who edged to Alex Lees at third slip, before a yorker accounted for Caleb Jewell as Derbyshire closed on 127-6, trailing by 156.

Elsewhere, Olly Stone took 6-44 as Division One leaders Nottinghamshire ousted Surrey for 162, closing on 147-3 to lead by 169. Second-placed Somerset posted 469 all out thanks to James Rew's unbeaten 74, with Jack Leach taking 4-37 as Essex were skittled for 158. Chris Woakes took 4-36 as Warwickshire dismissed Sussex for 156.

Back in Division Two, Zak Crawley followed his season's-best 81 with a second-ball duck but Kent closed on 38-2 to lead Middlesex by 139 runs.
