All Blacks Tour of South Africa: A New Rugby Chapter

The All Blacks are set to embark on a multi‑week tour of South Africa, the first of its kind in the modern era. The tour replaces this year’s Rugby Championship, leaving Australia and Argentina to shuffle fixtures. New Zealand’s coach Dave Rennie, in his third Test, will lead the side in a three‑match Test series dubbed the "Greatest Rivalry" tour, with a fourth game scheduled in Baltimore—the first Test between the rivals on American soil.

Economic pressure is a key driver. Reports suggest the joint venture could rival the financial success of the British and Irish Lions tours, potentially yielding millions in profit. A Deloitte study highlighted that the Super Rugby Pacific model is “under strain economically”, with all five New Zealand provinces posting losses over the past six years, the Hurricanes incurring a $1.4m loss in 2023 and nearly $2m in 2025.

On the field, the All Blacks have warmed up with convincing wins over the Sharks, Stormers and Bulls, but they have won only four Tests in South Africa since 2016. The Springboks, under Rassie Erasmus, remain world No. 1 and boast deep depth. The series will test both sides’ mettle ahead of the 2027 World Cup.

The tour’s success could reshape international rugby calendars, offering a lucrative product for broadcasters and fans alike, and may influence the future of the Super Rugby Pacific and the global calendar set to launch in 2024.
