The North Yorkshire and South Durham Cricket League has voiced genuine concern for the welfare of Saltburn Cricket Club members amid its inquiry into the Clicky Ponting cheating controversy.

Video footage shows Brian Devine clicking his fingers to secure a caught‑behind wicket in a second‑team match against Norton, sparking outrage and going viral on social media. The league launched an investigation on Monday, while Saltburn suspended Devine for the foreseeable future and treated the allegations with “utmost seriousness”. The incident has drawn global condemnation, with headlines in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, India, and the USA.

In a statement, the league said it met with Saltburn officials and received guidance from the England and Wales Cricket Board to ensure a comprehensive and fair process that respects infringements on natural justice and a right to a fair hearing. They highlighted the importance of supporting club members’ wellbeing.

Saltburn, 17 points clear at the top of Division Two after a 159‑run win, conceded its second‑team cup match against Marton. Additional footage allegedly shows Devine, then playing for Pudsey St Lawrence, repeatedly clicking while opponents batted. Both the club and the Bradford Premier League have denied prior knowledge of misconduct.
