A North Yorkshire cricket team is under investigation after allegations that a fielder attempted to trick umpires into awarding wickets by clicking his fingers.

The incident reportedly occurred during a Division Two match between Saltburn Cricket Club and Norton Cricket Club on Saturday. Footage of the alleged event has gone viral on social media, nearing five million views.

The clip appears to show a fielder at slip clicking his fingers as the ball passes the batter's bat, mimicking the sound of an edge. The Saltburn wicketkeeper then catches the ball, and the umpire gives the batter out.

The North Yorkshire and South Durham Cricket League has confirmed it has launched a formal investigation into the matter. "A full investigation has been initiated, and until such time as the formal processes are complete no further comment will be made," a league statement read. Saltburn Cricket Club has been contacted for comment.

Saltburn currently leads the Division Two league table. Their wicketkeeper also leads the league in fielding dismissals, with 31 catches behind the stumps. Additionally, Middlesbrough second XI captain Rory Cotterill alleged two further incidents involving Saltburn during a game in June.
