FIA Engine Upgrade Decision Sparks Controversy as Mercedes Gets Power Boost Despite Dominance

The FIA has granted Mercedes permission to upgrade their 2026 power unit under the Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities system, despite the Silver Arrows winning all six races this season. Mercedes secured the upgrade after being judged more than two percent behind Red Bull in internal combustion engine performance, while Ferrari, Audi and Honda received two upgrades each for being further adrift.

David Croft questioned the logic on Sky Sports F1's podcast, asking why the team with the best car and chassis package now receives development opportunities. The broadcaster noted the 79-point Constructors' Championship lead Mercedes holds over Ferrari, highlighting the disconnect between on-track success and regulatory assistance.

Craig Slater reported that Red Bull are stunned by the ruling, having built their power unit from scratch just five years ago. He suggested the decision could impact Max Verstappen's competitiveness and future in the sport, given Red Bull's fourth-place standing 172 points behind the leaders.

The controversy stems from the FIA's secrecy around measurement criteria and timing of results release. With Formula 1 heading to Barcelona this weekend, rivals may voice frustration over a system that rewards struggling teams while penalizing early success.
