Red Bull's Engine Ranking Sparks ADUO Controversy Before Austrian GP

The FIA's Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities system has ranked Red Bull's power unit as the benchmark for 2026, leaving the reigning champions stunned. Max Verstappen admitted surprise at the findings, especially given Mercedes' six race victories this season. The system evaluates only internal combustion engine performance, excluding hybrid components.

Red Bull's engine superiority means they receive no development upgrades, while Mercedes gets one permitted upgrade for being over two percent behind. Ferrari, Audi and Honda each receive two upgrades after falling more than four percent adrift. Team principal Laurent Mekies disputes the data, stating he sees no evidence supporting Red Bull's advantage over Mercedes.

Mekies confirmed Red Bull opened dialogue with the FIA to clarify the measurements, citing limitations in the single sensor used for power estimation. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff endorsed the system, calling it purely data-driven without political influence. Two additional ADUO reviews are scheduled for later this year.

Sky Sports F1 pundits Martin Brundle and Jacques Villeneuve criticized the approach, arguing Formula 1 should reward excellence rather than artificially level the playing field. The controversy heads to the Austrian Grand Prix this weekend, where teams will seek clarity on the engine development framework.
