Dolphins Cut Tagovailoa: NFL Record Cap Hit

The Miami Dolphins have made a significant move, releasing quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. This decision comes after a disappointing 7-10 season and will cost the team an NFL-record $99 million against the salary cap. The Dolphins' general manager cited a need to move in a new direction at the quarterback position. Tagovailoa's release marks the end of his six-year tenure with the team.

This decision follows Tagovailoa's $212 million contract extension signed less than two years ago. The team's struggles, including missing the playoffs for the second straight year, led to the firing of both the general manager and head coach. Tagovailoa was benched towards the end of last season, with rookie Quinn Ewers taking his place. The team has the NFL's longest playoff win drought.

Tagovailoa, drafted fifth overall in 2020, led the league in passing yards in 2023. However, his form dipped last season; he threw a career-high 15 interceptions. The Dolphins are hoping this move will help them get back on track. If the release is designated post-June 1, the cap hit will be split over two years.
