Dolphins Release Tua Tagovailoa, Falcons Emerge as Likely Landing Spot

The Miami Dolphins announced they will release quarterback Tua Tagovailoa at the start of the new league year, with the Atlanta Falcons emerging as the likely destination. Tagovailoa, who signed a $112.4 million extension in 2024, finished 25th in QBR the past two seasons and threw a career-high 15 interceptions in 14 games last year.

Dolphins general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan, who took over in January, has been noncommittal about Tagovailoa's future since the NFL combine. The team attempted to trade the 2023 NFL passing yards leader but found no buyers, leading to the decision to release him outright. This move follows other high-profile releases of Tyreek Hill and Bradley Chubb, signaling a potential reset for Miami.

The Falcons, who have Michael Penix Jr. nursing a torn ACL, view Tagovailoa as an intriguing fit despite his recent struggles. His left-handed throwing style matches Penix's, which helps maintain playbook consistency. At the veteran minimum salary, Tagovailoa could serve as a bridge quarterback while Penix recovers from his third torn ACL in eight seasons.
