Former Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa acknowledged Tuesday he needs to 'play better football' to compete for the Atlanta Falcons' starting job. Tagovailoa, who signed a $1.3 million veteran minimum contract after being released by Miami, said his 2024 performance fell below his standards. The 28-year-old threw a career-high 15 interceptions last season, losing his starting position.

Tagovailoa joins the Falcons as Michael Penix Jr.'s competition after the rookie starter suffered a torn ACL in Week 11. Atlanta general manager Ian Cunningham confirmed Tagovailoa will compete for the job when Penix returns from reconstructive surgery. The former Dolphins star led the NFL in passing yards in 2023 with 4,624 yards and 29 touchdowns, signing a four-year, $212.4 million extension that offseason.

Tagovailoa emphasized his competitive nature, saying he's 'excited to work alongside' Penix and help the younger player develop. The quarterback addressed his concussion history, confirming he's cleared all health protocols required by the Falcons. Atlanta also signed veteran Trevor Siemian on Tuesday to add depth to the quarterback room as the competition unfolds.
