Incoming MLS commissioner Larry Berg declared the league is poised for a "next chapter" and "new era." Berg, an LAFC co-owner, will officially assume the commissioner role at the start of next year, succeeding Don Garber, who will transition to league chairman in 2027. Berg emphasized building upon the league's established foundation, stating, "The foundation has been built. Now it's our responsibility to build on it." He plans to prioritize listening to stakeholders across the soccer community to help shape the league's future.

Berg, who will divest his ownership in LAFC, outlined a focus on youth development and improving on-field quality. He also indicated an analysis of the roster investment model. A significant immediate change under his leadership will be the league's shift to a summer-to-spring calendar, aligning with international counterparts. Following a shortened "sprint season" in early 2027, MLS will adopt the new schedule, beginning in July 2027 with the championship in May 2028.

Berg firmly dismissed the idea of promotion and relegation, citing concerns about stadium and training facility development, as well as owner investment. Garber, who has led MLS since 1999, expressed confidence in Berg's ability to bring new energy to the sport, noting the current favorable climate following the successful World Cup hosted in the US.
