Sabres Trade for Olen Zellweger to Bolster Blue Line

The Buffalo Sabres acquired defenseman Olen Zellweger from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for forward prospect Anton Wahlberg and a second-round draft pick. This move follows Buffalo's recent trade of Bowen Byram to the Chicago Blackhawks, leaving a void on the roster that the team needed to fill quickly with a puck-moving presence.

Zellweger recorded seven goals and 22 points across 76 games during the Ducks' first playoff run since 2018. Anaheim moved the second-round pick because he had slipped to a third-pairing role. He averaged less ice time than Drew Helleson and played 48 seconds fewer per game than Radko Gudas.

Buffalo now has $13.799 million in salary cap space to sign Zellweger, who is currently a restricted free agent. He joins a defensive group featuring Rasmus Dahlin and Owen Power. Anaheim cleared a roster spot while facing the potential loss of John Carlson, Jacob Trouba, and Gudas to the open market.

This trade addresses Buffalo's need for a second-pairing option after losing Byram. Anaheim prioritizes flexibility as they manage multiple restricted free agents and looming free agency departures. The deal provides the Sabres a proven offensive threat from the Anaheim Ducks system.
