Byram becomes Blackhawks' top defenseman after blockbuster trade

Bowen Byram arrived in Chicago as the Blackhawks’ newly‑minted No. 1 defenseman after the Tuesday trade with Buffalo. Chicago surrendered its second‑round No. 4 selection, the 45th‑overall pick, and defenseman Louis Crevier for Byram and power forward Jordan Greenway. The 25‑year‑old posted 11 goals and a career‑best 42 points last season, helping the Sabres clinch the Atlantic title.

Byram never held a top‑pair role in Colorado or Buffalo, shadowing Cale Makar and Rasmus Dahlin, so Chicago expects him to anchor the blue line immediately, adding depth. The trade also adds Greenway, a 6‑foot‑6 physical presence who logged a goal and five assists in 40 games. General manager Kyle Davidson said the move aligns with the club’s youth‑first timeline.

The Blackhawks surrendered a high pick that could have bolstered Connor Bedard’s supporting cast, but Davidson believes internal forwards like Roman Kantserov will fill that need. Byram, whose father briefly suited up for Chicago in 1991, grew up cheering the team and now partners with Bedard, a former teammate from Team Canada. He will debut in the upcoming season with the hope of solidifying Chicago’s defense.
