The Nashville Predators have hired Chris MacFarland away from the Colorado Avalanche, naming him president of hockey operations and general manager. Owner Bill Haslam called MacFarland a perfect fit after an exhaustive search that began in February when Barry Trotz stepped aside. The move gives MacFarland a promotion from his GM role in Colorado.

MacFarland takes over a Predators team that missed the playoffs in three of the last four seasons and finished four points shy of a wild-card spot. Nashville enters the offseason with $27.2 million in cap space to rebuild around veterans like Filip Forsberg and Roman Josi while developing young talent. The Central Division competition will test MacFarland's roster construction skills immediately.

The Avalanche surprisingly allowed their division rival to interview MacFarland despite him being under contract. Colorado won the Presidents' Trophy this season but was swept by Vegas in the conference finals. Joe Sakic will guide the Avalanche through the draft and free agency before determining the front office structure.

With less than $3 million in cap space and four defensemen headed to unrestricted free agency, Colorado faces roster challenges. Cale Makar enters the final year of his deal before becoming eligible for free agency after 2026-27. MacFarland's departure leaves a significant void in Denver's hockey operations.
