The Washington Capitals have traded veteran defenseman John Carlson to the Anaheim Ducks in a surprising move ahead of the NHL trade deadline. The 36-year-old, who spent his entire 15-year career with Washington, was dealt for a conditional first-round pick in 2026 or 2027 and a 2027 third-round pick.

Carlson's departure marks the end of an era in Washington, leaving only captain Alex Ovechkin and winger Tom Wilson from their 2018 Stanley Cup-winning team. The Capitals entered Friday four points out of a wild-card spot but face stiff competition from the Blue Jackets and Senators. Carlson, with 10 goals and 46 points in 55 games this season, was in the final year of his eight-year, $8 million annual contract.

Anaheim, sitting just a point behind Vegas in the Pacific Division race, adds another veteran to their young core. The Ducks could slot Carlson into their top defensive pairing and power-play quarterback role. With $44.426 million in projected cap space, Anaheim may still make additional moves before the 3 p.m. ET deadline.
