The Carolina Hurricanes acquired the negotiating rights to defenseman John Carlson from the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday, sending prospect Kyle Masters and a sixth-round pick to Anaheim. The move positions Carolina to sign the veteran before unrestricted free agency begins Wednesday, adding experience to their defensive corps.

Carlson, 36, posted 14 goals and 60 points across 71 regular-season games with Washington and Anaheim last season. His six points in 12 playoff games helped the Ducks reach the second round before falling to the Vegas Golden Knights. This marks a return to the Eastern Conference for Carlson, who spent his first 15 seasons with the Washington Capitals before the deadline deal.

Carolina enters July with $11.105 million in available salary cap space, providing flexibility to lock up Carlson on a new contract. The Hurricanes already have five defensemen under contract for next season, including Jalen Chatfield and Jaccob Slavin. Alexander Nikishin, a pending restricted free agent, remains in trade discussions.

This acquisition gives the Stanley Cup champions additional blue-line depth as they reload for another championship run. Carlson's puck-moving ability and playoff experience address a specific need for a team looking to defend their title.
