Capitals lock up Liljegren with $6.5M deal as Ovechkin future looms

Washington Capitals re-signed defenseman Timothy Liljegren to a two-year, $6.5 million deal, GM Chris Patrick announced Wednesday. Liljegren, 27, will count $3.25 million against the salary cap in both 2026-27 and 2027-28. He joined Washington at the March trade deadline after the Capitals acquired him from San Jose, but only played four games with the team before the season ended.

The signing helps patch a blue line missing John Carlson, who Washington shipped to Anaheim on the eve of the deadline. Liljegren has 94 points in 324 career NHL games, though most of that production came with Toronto. At 27, he's entering his prime, but he hasn't yet had the chance to prove he can anchor a top-pairing role in Washington's system.

Ovechkin's future remains the bigger question for this franchise. The 41-year-old has not declared whether he'll return for a 22nd season, leaving the Capitals' identity and offensive ceiling in limbo. Patrick's defensive signings buy time, but the team's direction hinges on what Ovechkin decides.
