Avalanche Lock Up Defensive Pairings Before Free Agency

The Colorado Avalanche addressed their defensive situation Friday by re-signing Brett Kulak and Brent Burns to new contracts. Kulak agreed to a five-year extension worth $4.5 million annually after joining the team in a trade from Pittsburgh last season. Burns returns on a one-year deal with a base salary of $850,000 that could escalate to $2 million through performance bonuses.

Both players bring significant experience to Colorado's blue line. Kulak averaged over 19 minutes of ice time in 27 regular-season games and exceeded 20 minutes during the playoffs. Burns, 41, contributed 12 goals and 35 points across 82 games while maintaining his iron man streak. The veteran defenseman added four points in the postseason despite the Avalanche's early exit.

These signings follow a series of salary-cap clearing moves by the organization. Colorado traded Ross Colton and Valeri Nichushkin to create flexibility, with Joe Sakic resuming general manager duties after Chris Mac Farland departed for Nashville. The moves solidify a defensive core that already includes Norris Trophy winner Cale Makar and Devon Toews.

Puck Pedia projects the Avalanche have approximately $5.629 million in remaining cap space entering free agency, giving them room to pursue additional upgrades after being swept by Vegas in the Western Conference finals.
